Mega Moolah jackpot smashing records, over $11 million

9 Sep 2015

By Aaron Todd
Microgaming's Mega Moolah jackpot hit eight figures in August and is larger than it has ever been, nearing the $/€/£11.4 million mark as of Sept. 9.

All Mega Moolah jackpots are paid out to players in the currency in which they are playing. If the winner is playing in a currency that is not the one worth the most at the time — currently pounds — then when the jackpot resets, it is only reduced by the value paid out once the exchange rate has been taken into account. In this case, if someone playing in U.S. dollars won $11.4 million, the jackpot would be reduced by approximately £7.4 million (using today's exchange rates), and the new jackpot would be about $/€/£4 million.

The largest jackpot ever awarded by the online slot was €6.3 million on May 11, 2009 to Georgios M. in Greece. If you're looking for an apples-to-apples comparison, that jackpot was worth approximately $8.6 million, or £5.6 million at the time.

Mega Moolah is a five-reel, 25-payline online slot that features a safari theme. Lions act as wild multiplier symbols, and players can win free spins with three or more monkey scatter symbols.

But the game gets really interesting when a player activates the progressive jackpot bonus game. There are four jackpots that can be won: the mini progressive (guaranteed to be at least $/€/£10), the minor progressive (at least $/€/£100), the major progressive (at least $/€/£10,000) and the mega progressive, which starts at $/€/£1 million.

Each time players spin the reels on the game, a portion of their bet feeds the jackpots. The last time the mega jackpot was won was April, which has allowed the jackpot to grow to the record amount.

The progressive jackpot game is activated randomly, but the higher the bet, the more likely the game will be triggered. The jackpot game appears on a new screen, with a giant spinning wheel (think Wheel of Fortune) determining which jackpot the player will win.

The game has been getting plenty of play by people looking to win big. In late August, the major progressive was hit three times in 24 hours for approximately £27,000, £36,000 and £30,000. Nicola, a user on the Casinomeister forums, reported that the mini and minor jackpots were being won several times a second.

If you're looking to play for a big jackpot and but would prefer a different game, you can still take a shot at the eight-figure prize by playing The Dark Knight, which also contributes to — and can trigger — the massive jackpots on offer on Mega Moolah.

You can play Mega Moolah at 286 online casinos, including GoWild Casino, bet365 Games and BetVictor Casino. The Dark Knight is available at 206 online casinos, including Casino La Vida, Golden Riviera Casino and Betway Casino.
