In March 2024, a coalition of Maine lawmakers advanced an online gambling bill (LD 1777) featuring a modified tax rate and granting authority to the tribes.

Under the current proposal, the state's four tribes, already holding a monopoly on online sports betting, would also monopolize online casino operations. The bill is expected to be debated in the full legislature during the 2025 session. If enacted, Maine would become one of the first states to grant tribal exclusivity for both online sports betting and iGaming.

In August 2017, Maine become the fifth state that year to legalize and regulate paid-entry fantasy sports when Gov. Paul LePage neither signed nor vetoed a bill, allowing it to become law by inaction. Under the bill, fantasy sports is a game of skill and exempt from gambling laws. The Gambling Control Unit within the state's Department of Public Safety oversees the industry, and the licensing fee for large operators is $2,500. The bill requires operators to pay licensing fees and 10% of their gross revenue.
