PokerStars ready for EPT Greece event

1 Sep 2011

LONDON, England -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- PokerStars is delighted to announce that the European Poker Tour will head to Greece this autumn for the first time ever. The inaugural Greek event will be the fifth stop of EPT Season 8, and is set to take place in the fabulous five-star beach resort of Club Hotel Casino Loutraki, just outside Athens, from November 15-20.

Club Hotel Casino Loutraki (CHCL) will host the debut festival, which is set to include a five-day €4,400 Main Event as well as a wide range of exciting side events. The Loutraki event follows the success of two PokerStars.net-sponsored Greek Poker Cup events – held earlier this year at CHCL – which together attracted more than 500 players from Greece and around the world.

No-Limit Texas Hold’em poker is becoming increasingly popular in Greece and is the fastest growing mind sport in the country. Greek players have already made a significant impact on the European Poker Tour, with Konstantinos Nanos registering a third-place finish at EPT Vienna last season for €265,000. This historic first EPT in Greece will give the local players an opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the country’s first major poker championship title.

Greek pros Konstantinos Alexiou and George “gkap13” Kapalas have also both made EPT final tables in recent years. Kapalas, who has also achieved several World Series of Poker final tables and is leading the Greece All-Time Money List, is one of three PokerStars.net-sponsored “Greek Challengers” who will be competing at EPT Loutraki. The other two are Alexis “J0hnny_Dr@m@” Zervos and Stavros “IDOLLS” Kalfas, who final-tabled the first Greek Poker Cup in March and came third in the EPT6 San Remo €2,000 side event.

Kapalas said: “This is great news that the EPT will visit Greece. I’m truly excited to have such a prestigious tournament taking place in my country. Fellow Greek players have an opportunity to compete in a high calibre tournament with large numbers, and players visiting Greece will enjoy the beautiful Greek landmarks and famous hospitality.”

Club Hotel Casino Loutraki

CHCL is one of the biggest casinos in Europe and opened Greece’s first ever dedicated poker room in September 2010. It is the largest live poker room in Greece with 14 permanent tables in operation. The EPT event will see a substantial temporary increase in the number of tables available for players.

Alexandros Doukas, General Manager of CHCL, said: “We are very happy to extend our strategic partnership with PokerStars.net, after two very successful Greek Poker Cup tournaments. The EPT’s debut in Greece is a very exciting development for Loutraki as a top tourist destination, for our casino, and for Greek poker in general.”

Loutraki, one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations, boasts superb beaches and a wide range of water sports. There are numerous tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, and limitless opportunities for shopping, as well as plentiful bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

Online qualification

From September, free online satellites to qualify for EPT Loutraki will run online at PokerStars.net.

EPT Season 8

The eighth European Poker Tour began at the start of August in the beautiful Estonian capital of Tallinn, and is currently reaching the climax of the second leg in Barcelona today (September 1). The tour then heads to London from September 30 to October 6 and San Remo from October 21-27, before the Loutraki event in November. More events for Season 8 are still to be announced.
