Full Contact Poker merges with PokerStars

11 Jun 2007

By Ryan McLane

Full Contact Poker will shut down its online poker room effective tomorrow and current players will have the opportunity to move their accounts to PokerStars as part of a merger between the two online poker rooms, according to the FCP Web site.

In a separate, but related deal, long-time FCP front-man Daniel Negreanu signed an endorsement deal with PokerStars over the weekend. He joins PokerStars' star-studded team that includes World Series of Poker Main Event champions Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer and Joe Hachem.

"I've enjoyed a long personal relationship with the folks at PokerStars since the company's founding in 2001 and have always felt as though PokerStars fully understood what players wanted," Negreanu said. "The organization seems like the perfect fit for me and I'm glad they feel the same way."

Former FCP players will be allowed to transfer their balances into PokerStars accounts, per an email sent to FCP players. FCP is no longer allowing deposits or withdrawals, meaning FCP players will need to transfer their balances in order to access their money. All FCP accounts will be closed effective Thursday, June 14.

Current FCP players will be contacted by PokerStars via email with specific instructions on how to transfer their balances or set up a new account.

According to estimates by FCP forum members, 90 percent of the community has an active PokerStars account.

FCP will now exist as a poker community only. The forum, one of the most popular poker-related message boards on the Internet, will continue to feature material from Negreanu, including his written blog, video blog and forum entries.

PokerStars has agreed to continue many events that formed the core of FCP's offerings. Negreanu's Protégé 3, Weekend at Daniel's events and the weekly Negreanu Open will become PokerStars events.

"Daniel embodies what poker and PokerStars are all about: enjoying the excitement and the challenge of poker," Team PokerStars member Barry Greenstein said. "Daniel is a true ambassador of the sport and we welcome him as well as all of his players and fans from Full Contact Poker. We know they will enjoy the PokerStars experience."
