Casino City’s Friday Five: VR edition

26 Oct 2018

By Dan Ippolito
A lot happened this week in the gaming industry. We have three jackpots to cover, along with a new event venue in Las Vegas, William Hill partnering with a professional sports team, and the introduction of a VR slot game.

Let’s begin with a few jackpots:

5. IGT’s Wheel of Fortune awards two jackpots
International Game Technology’s Wheel of Fortune slots awarded two massive jackpots in September totaling more than $3.8 million.

Lucky slot players won the following million dollar-plus jackpots on the player-favorite Wheel of Fortune-themed slots:
  • On 1 September, a Wheel of Fortune slots player won $2,481,941 at a major resort and casino in Atlantic City, N.J.
  • On 26 September, a Wheel of Fortune slots player won $1,412,123 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Since IGT launched Wheel of Fortune in 1995, the theme has created more than 1,000 millionaires and delivered more than $3 billion in jackpots.

4. Player hits $750,000 jackpot at Delta Downs Racetrack Casino
A guest at Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel turned a stay into a $750,367 payday when she hit Aristocrat’s Buffalo Thundering 7's slot jackpot early Sunday, 21 October.

Sandra N. of Houston, Texas, parlayed a five-dollar spin into a life-changing prize at 10:26 a.m. Sunday morning, winning the top prize.

The slots were sizzling this past weekend, as Sandra’s jackpot was followed almost immediately by an $80,000 hit on an IGT game. Bruce G. of Texas landed on the winning combination with a $100 bet.

3. Plaza Hotel and Casino to open new event venue
Located in Las Vegas, the Plaza Hotel and Casino is expanding its outdoor equestrian facility by making it the first and only permanent outdoor equestrian center in downtown Las Vegas.

The goal is to have it ready for the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR), which takes place in early December. An official hotel sponsor of the NFR and exclusive Host Hotel for the Junior NFR, the Plaza’s new equestrian center will feature two outdoor arenas for roping practice and exercise during the rodeo.

In this expanded equestrian center adjacent to the hotel/casino, the Plaza doubled the number of equine stalls to 200, 80 of which will be available for year-round use. During NFR, the facility will offer the largest stalls in the city and 24-hour onsite security and veterinarian services, making it easy for rodeo participants and enthusiasts to know their animals will be safe while they enjoy their evening just steps away, playing on the casino floor or having a delicious steak dinner at Oscar’s Steakhouse.

After NFR concludes, the Plaza’s equestrian center will become the city’s newest outdoor event venue, diversifying the downtown experience and attracting more business and people to downtown Las Vegas year-round.

In addition to the equestrian center, the Plaza has a full slate of rodeo-related events during NFR.

2. William Hill partners with NJ Devils and Prudential Center
William Hill U.S., the New Jersey Devils and Prudential Center announced yesterday a multi-year agreement, signifying the first professional sports team to partner with a sportsbook in New Jersey after the state’s legalization of sports betting in June 2018.

The partnership, with two of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment’s marquee properties, is highlighted by a permanent in-arena activation called the “William Hill Sports Lounge.” With the goal of providing a dynamic and engaging sports viewing experience, the lounge will feature more than 20 digital screens showcasing the world’s most popular sporting events and compelling odds.

In addition to the William Hill Sports Lounge, the partnership will feature a TV-visible dasher board; dynamic, in-arena signage; and recognition on the LED ribbon board of the “William Hill Line Change,” which will occur at the first New Jersey Devils’ line change each period. During Devils games, updated league-wide odds, presented by William Hill, will be displayed on Prudential Center’s 9,584-square-foot, four-story-tall scoreboard, the largest in-arena scoreboard in the world.

Outside the arena, William Hill will sponsor fan watch parties for Devils games at Monmouth Park. The partnership will also feature promotions for William Hill on the team’s radio and digital broadcast on the Devils Hockey Network, on Prudential Center’s exterior marquee LED billboard, and across the Devils’ digital and social media channels.

1. SlotsMillion launches first VR in-browser slot game by Evoplay Entertainment
Evoplay Entertainment, a games development company, recently released its long-awaited 3-D/VR slot game Necromancer.

The game opens up a new stage in VR-based technology in iGaming and is the first online game in the industry to require no additional software or installations to run. While playing Necromancer on a mobile device, players can switch to VR mode in just one click on the screen without affecting the game.

The 3-D technology is featured by a camera rotation effect, helping immerse players in the atmosphere of a little spooky ceremony and allowing them to watch the characters from more angles than in regular 3-D video slots.
