"Yeah baby!" Nguyen wins Casino City WSOP honors

19 Jul 2007

While Jerry Yang won the most money at the 2007 World Series of Poker ($8.25 million for winning the Main Event), Scotty Nguyen was the best overall player in the 55 tournaments that made up the Series, according to the Casino City WSOP Player of the Year leader board.

Nguyen, who entered the Main Event ranked third on our leader board, leapfrogged over Michael Binger and Thor Hansen with his 11th-place finish to claim the title with 373.1 points.

Alexander Kravchenko, who was fourth in the Main Event, moved up from 15th to second, but wouldn't have been able to reach Nguyen, even with a win in the Main Event.

Nguyen had an impressive run in the 2007 WSOP, starting off with a 10th-place finish in the $2,500 Omaha/Seven Card Stud Hi-Low event. He was second to Eli Elezra in the $3,000 World Championship Seven Card Stud Hi-Low event, then advanced to the final 32 in the inaugural $5,000 World Championship Heads-Up No Limit Hold'em event. He made his second final table in a $1,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low event, finishing fourth, and added his third World Championship cash with a 15th-place showing in the $10,000 World Championship Pot Limit Omaha event.

Nguyen trailed Michael Binger by 15 points on our leaderboard and needed a 49th-place finish to move ahead of Binger in the standings. But it turned out that he needed to finish at least 24th finish atop the standings because of Kravchenko's impressive final table run.

Binger, who tied a WSOP record with eight cashes in the 2007 Series, finished third, while Thor Hansen and Robert Mizrachi rounded out the top five.

About the Casino City WSOP Player of the Year race: The Casino City Editorial Team devised a top-secret formula for its Player of the Year selection. The formula was created using legal pads, cell phone calculators and a great deal of shoulder shrugging.

Without giving away too much information, the formula rewards top-50 finishers in each bracelet event, weights performance based on buy-in amounts and participation numbers, and awards bonus points to players who make final tables, win a bracelets and do well in World Championship events.
