West Warwick Casino Impact Study Released

WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island -- As reported by the Providence Journal: "The town could handle the public safety needs of the proposed $1-billion casino if, among other things, the Police Department adds one officer per shift and the Fire Department bulks up training efforts, according to a study released Friday.

"'I take the report as constructive criticism,' said Police Chief Peter Brousseau said.

"…The voters here and statewide will decide on Nov. 7 whether to authorize Harrah's Entertainment to build the casino in the town's business park in partnership with the Narragansett Indian Tribe.

"…The study was performed by Dallas-based Erase Enterprises, which reviewed data, conducted site visits and held interviews in August.

"The biggest strain on police and fire services could come during construction of the casino, because of a transient work force, according to the report.

"…The report also suggests creating a police substation on the casino grounds. The two-room substation would include an office and a room for interviews. There also should be a temporary holding area on the premises for people who are arrested, according to the report…"
