West Warwick approves agreement

WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "The outcome of last night's Town Council vote on the casino development agreement with Harrah's Entertainment came as no surprise.

"Council members, meeting in front of about 100 people in the West Warwick High School auditorium, stuck to the stances they'd taken in the past weeks, voting 3-2 to approve the agreement.

"Council Democrats John J. Flynn, the council president, and Edward Giroux and Jeanne-Marie DiMasi voted in favor of the agreement; Republican Leo Costantino and Democrat Peter F. Calci Jr. voted against it.

"…The vote means that in the next three days, the town will receive $300,000 from Harrah's Entertainment as a signing bonus. The town will keep that money regardless of the Nov. 7 vote.

"…Under the agreement, Harrah's would loan the town a total of $5 million between now and the start of construction. The town would reimburse the company the loan amount, at 3 percent interest, through reductions in the portion of gaming revenue the town would receive from the casino…"
