FLORIDA – As reported by the Pensacola News Journal: "Less than a year after Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and Mississippi, some people are wondering if a world that revolves around luck and statistics may have gone too far.

"On Internet gambling sites, thousands nationwide now are betting on hurricanes.

"How many named storms and hurricanes will form in 2006? Will a Category 5 storm make landfall in the United States? How many Category 3 storms will form during this year's hurricane season?

"Some people say that wagering on hurricanes is tasteless and offensive.

"…'That's why when we developed odds, we didn't touch death or destruction or whether it would make landfall,' said Dave Johnson, owner of Wagerweb.com, which has taken more than 1,000 bets on hurricanes this year.

"Brandon Adams, a Gulf Breeze resident who often goes to Las Vegas to play poker, said he has no problem with betting on hurricanes even though his parents' Gulf Breeze homes were both damaged during Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
