Washington Tribe Promotes Casino Proposal
WASHINGTON – As reported by the Columbian: "To persuade the community to support a tribal casino near La Center, the Cowlitz Tribe pointed to the track record of its business partner, The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, in a series of meetings Thursday.
"The tribe's casino, the Mohegan Sun, is beautiful, employs thousands and contributes millions to the state, said Cowlitz spokesman David Barnett, who introduced Mohegan Chairman Mark Brown to the Battle Ground Chamber of Commerce.
"…Barnett said he hopes the Cowlitz can replicate the financial success of the Mohegan Tribe and its popularity in southeastern Connecticut. The Mohegans not only are providing financial backing for the Cowlitz casino plans, but will help operate the facility if it's built.
"The Cowlitz Tribe is waiting for the federal government to decide whether it can establish a reservation and build a casino on 152 acres near La Center.
"…This was the first time the Cowlitz's financial backers have been introduced to the community. Since the two tribes began collaborating this summer, Cowlitz officials have been meeting regularly with city councils, school districts, neighborhood associations and other groups…"
