UNITAB Sparks New Zealand Casino Consolidation

NEW ZEALAND – As reported by the Australian: "UNITAB is likely to spark the next round of consolidation in the gambling industry after grabbing a strategic stake in New Zealand casino operator Sky City Entertainment.

"Shares in Sky City - owner of casinos in Auckland, Adelaide and Darwin - yesterday rose more than 4 per cent to a 2 1/2-month high of $4.35 on strong volumes.

"About 800,000 shares were traded in Australia, but twice that number changed hands in New Zealand, with Macquarie and Credit Suisse First Boston handling the bulk of the trades.

"Unitab was believed to have built up a 2 per cent stake in Sky City ahead of yesterday's buying, which is still unlikely to push it over the 5 per cent mark necessary for it to declare the stake.

"…Unitab operates TABs in Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory, as well as running internet betting and an extensive gambling management service in NSW and Queensland…"
