Turkey arrests two Sportingbet employees

29 May 2008

By Vin Narayanan

Two Sportingbet employees have been detained in Turkey, the company announced today. The detentions appear to be part of a larger crackdown on Superbahis, Sportingbet's Turkish-facing business.

Several people from Sportingbet's former marketing partner Maslin Properties have also been arrested. The two Sportingbet employees were Turkish nationals who worked in the U.K. The pair were vacationing in Turkey.

The Turkish market accounted for 14 percent of Sportingbet's revenue in the last quarter. In the quarter before that, Turkey accounted for about 26 percent of the companies revenue.

The Turkish government has not offered an explanation for the arrests, the company said.

Turkey approved legislation last year that prohibited online gambling offerings by unauthorized domestic or foreign companies.
