Tribe, Harrah's Plan Future Fight for Casino

1 Sep 2004

WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island -- As reported by the Associated Press: "The Narragansett Indian Tribe and Harrah's Entertainment are discussing plans for future efforts to build a casino in West Warwick, after this year's project was thwarted by the courts and an adverse opinion by the attorney general's office.

"Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas said the tribe would present a proposal in the next legislative session, beginning January, and would also take steps to build a gambling facility on the tribe's land.

"The Narragansetts are prohibited by law from constructing a casino on their property in Charlestown, but Thomas said the tribe would approach the federal government to try to change the statute.

"...Any expansion of gambling in the state needs voter approval..."
