Top 10 Major League Baseball teams to win the 2022 World Series

4 Jul 2022

By Dan Ippolito
We are approaching the mid-season point in Major League Baseball and front-runners have started to appear in the standings. There is still plenty of baseball left to be played before the postseason begins in October, but we have a sense of who the bigger threats are and who looks to be able to make deep runs in the playoffs. Here, we take a look at 10 teams who have a chance to raise The Commissioner’s Trophy.

10. Cleveland Guardians
In the team’s first year of being called the Guardians, Cleveland is right in the mix of the wild card race. This year, three wild card teams from both the American League and National League will make the postseason.

At +5000 on bet365 Sportsbook & Racebook to win the World Series, the Guardians are led by third baseman Jose Ramirez, who is already over the 60 RBI mark.

The infield of Cleveland is where the offense really comes from. In addition to Ramirez, Amed Rosario at shortstop and Andres Gimenez at second are the leaders when it comes to putting up runs for the team.

Flip over to the other half of the innings and you have some strong pitching from Cleveland as well, especially with Shane Bieber who has already broken 10 quality starts so far this season while averaging nine strikeouts per nine innings.

9. Milwaukee Brewers
The Milwaukee Brewers may not have a high team batting average but they know how to win close games and a lot of that has to do with the team’s pitching and bullpen.

However, that doesn’t mean the offense is a liability.

You have Christian Yelich, who is always a threat at the plate despite not having a year that is expected of him. Team Yelich up with Rowdy Tellez, Willy Adames and Hunter Renfroe and you have three more guys who have hit double digit homeruns this season.

But let’s get back to the team’s pitching. Corbin Burnes, last year’s NL Cy Young winner, is nothing short of an ace and the Brewers also have eight pitchers who average at least 11 strikeouts per nine innings. It is hard to make errors when batters are struggling to put the ball in play against your pitching staff.

At +1400 on Everygame Sportsbook, the Brewers could make some noise come October.

8. New York Mets
You may wonder with the record the New York Mets have, why are they so low on my list? Well, if you are a Mets fan you probably know why as you’ve seen your team over the years bring hope and then dramatically take it away.

At the start of the season, the Mets (currently +750 on bet365) were off to the races and looked like an impressive team and in some areas they still do. But yet, they are finding ways to lose games late and aren’t putting winning streaks together as they did in April and early May. In fact, the club has let one of its rivals creep up on them which I will get into shortly.

Let me highlight the positive though. First baseman Pete Alonso, reigning Home Rub Derby Champion, has incredible power and if you give him a pitch to hit you better be ready for a ball coming off the bat at 105+ MPH.

The pitching has been solid with Taijuan Walker and first-year Met Max Scherzer, but the team and rotation is not the same without arguably the best pitcher in baseball, Jacob DeGrom. DeGrom, who is dealing with a right shoulder injury, is inching his way closer to a rehab start.

When DeGrom does return, it could bring back that spark and more Ws.

7. Toronto Blue Jays
This Toronto Blue Jays have become a blast to watch over the last couple of years. The Jays are in the heavily contested AL East with the Red Sox and Rays. Granted those teams are fighting for second, since the Yankees are off and running with the division title.

This team has incredible power with hitters like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, George Springer and Matt Chapman to name a few. Don’t forget Alejandro Kirk behind the plate at catcher who leads the Blue Jays in batting average.

Even if the Jays fall behind early, you can’t count this team out with the fire power they have up and down the line.

If Toronto (+1200 on Everygame) can claim a wild card spot come playoff time, be on the lookout for them to be blasting some long balls over the fences.

6. Houston Astros
The Astros lost George Springer to the Blue Jays two years ago and this last offseason, lost shortstop Carlos Correa to the Minnesota Twins, but still have some memorable names in the lineup.

Houston (+600 on Everygame) is comfortably in first place in the AL West behind the likes of Alex Bregman, Michael Brantley and Jose Altuve. However, the man who leads the Astros in nearly every offensive category, Yordan Alvarez, was involved in a collision last Wednesday night and had to be carted off of the field.

If Alvarez has to miss some time, then Yuri Gurriel and Kyle Tucker will need to pick up more slack and be more productive on the offensive end to help guys like Altuve and Brantley.

As for the pitching, Justin Verlander is looking like his old self on the mound with an ERA just north of two. Framber Valdez is also putting up very solid numbers.

When these guys turn it over to the bullpen, you have the nearly unhittable Ryan Stanek who through his first 28 appearances, only allowed two earned runs.

5. San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres are in a battle in the NL West with the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place and they are doing it without the best player on the team, Fernando Tatis Jr., who is recovering from wrist surgery. It’s crazy that Tatis hasn’t played a game this season yet and he still is receiving a ton of fan votes for the All Star Game. There is hope that Tatis will be taking batting practice off a pitching machine in the next few weeks.

Tatis’ partner on the right side of the infield, Manny Machado has picked up the slack offensively in Fernando’s absence.

The pitching staff is also dealing with the injury bug as Blake Snell and Mike Clevinger have suffered injuries and left major holes in the starting rotation.

When the Padres (+1100 on bet365) return to its normal lineup and rotation, they are one of the most dangerous teams in all of baseball.

4. Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox fan in me wanted to put this team at the top of my list but I try not to be too biased…usually.

However, there are plenty of reasons for Boston to be where they are on my list. After starting 10-19, the Red Sox (+2000 on bet365) have turned the season around. The three-headed monster of Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts and JD Martinez has led the offense as they all have batting averages over .300.

The offseason addition of Trevor Story has seemed to be a good fit as Story has passed 50 RBIs already and is in the conversation to win a Gold Glove at second base.

The pitching has also done a 180-degree turn. Michael Wacha has been exceptional and the Red Sox have won nine of Nick Pivetta’s last 10 starts on the mound.

Chris Sale is planning to make his return from the IL at some point this season, which could add another boost if he’s able to come back with just some of his talent from previous seasons.

3. Atlanta Braves
The defending World Series Champs have made up some serious ground on the New York Mets in the NL East and are playing some great baseball. Losing Braves legend Freddie Freeman to the Dodgers in free agency was a big blow to the team early on offensively but that has picked up over the last month. Nick Mariano picked them to repeat was World Champs before the season got under way.

Having Ronald Acuna Jr. back in the lineup after he missed the end of last season, is a huge boost for the Braves lineup, as well as bringing back Marcell Ozuna.

Freeman left a big hole at first base, but Atlanta (+1200 on Everygame) wasted no time in signing Matt Olsen to fill in.

Olsen is joined by Dansby Swanson, Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley, a trio that has really come on of late to push this team in a contending position again.

The Braves also have my favorite pitcher to watch, Max Fried. One of the top pitchers in the NL, the left-handed hurler has an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio and he knows how to keep players’ hits from leaving the yard.

The Braves lineup 1-9 is one of the more complete lineups in baseball and can be a major problem to pitching staffs in the postseason.

2. New York Yankees
It kills me to write how impressive the New York Yankees have been this year but this article would be nothing without putting the best team in baseball high on the list.

The Yankees (+400 on Everygame) have just taken off and pulled away in the AL East. Aaron Judge, who Yankees fans hope they sign in the offseason, is the biggest offensive threat in baseball. Pick a batting category, and Judge probably leads New York in it.

If you somehow manage to send Judge back to the bench, you then get the pleasure of dealing with Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton who both have reached 50 RBIs.

This team is the favorite to win the World Series and rightfully so. Whether it’s blowing teams out, or coming from behind in the late innings to win games, the Yankees just know how to end up with more runs.

Gerrit Cole is looking more like the pitcher the Yankees signed than the one who showed up last year. Nestor Cortes has been a surprise to many in baseball as he has been lockdown on the mound.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers
I know the Yankees are the favorites and have proven why they are but it is tough to go against the Los Angeles Dodgers (+450 on Everygame) and the names they have on the roster.

Trea Turner, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, Cody Bellinger and Justin Turner. There is just no way that I can go with another team when these names are all in the same lineup.

Sure Bellinger and Muncy may be struggling but these guys have been in the big games and got knocked out by the Braves last year when everyone thought they would win.

That’s just a portion of the offense. Then you have names like Clayton Kershaw, Julio Urias, Tony Gonsolin and Walker Buehler in the starting rotation and that alone is a good pitching staff.

This team has impressive pieces in every aspect of the game and I think they have a chip on their shoulder after being the favorite to win last year and they ended up losing in the NLCS to the eventual winners.
