This Week in Gambling: The push for a Las Vegas reopen date

22 Apr 2020

The push for a specific date on a Las Vegas reopen has begun. Some casino operators want to open their doors in May, but Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman wants it done yesterday. But what would happen if we had a Las Vegas reopen tomorrow?

J. Todd also covers news from Tribal Gaming as they deal with the coronavirus closures, and say 'thank you' to an unlikely person.

The day after the Nevada governor declared he was nowhere near a Las Vegas reopen or any other parts of the state’s idled economy, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said the number of people who have “tragically” died statewide from the COVID-19 respiratory illness represents less than one-half of 1% of the state’s more than 3 million people. Yet, she said the entire state has been brought to its knees.

Governor Sisolak, a Democrat, did not immediately respond to the comments by the three-term mayor and political independent who also serves on the board of the powerful Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. But the governor said he’ll follow the advice of doctors and hospitals about infection and death rates, along with consultation with businesses about economic impacts before lifting an order to enable a Las Vegas reopen. “This is not going to be a political decision for as to when to open,” Sisolak said, adding that and Las Vegas reopen would be based on the advice of doctors.
