This Week in Gambling: The politics of Disney sports betting

30 Sep 2021

Disney Corporation has spent millions of dollars and several years fighting gambling expansion. So, why would they suddenly change course and embrace sports betting? And could Disney sports betting become a real thing? Also, The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas has a new owner... sort of... as MGM Resorts buys it.

It wasn’t long ago that Disney sports betting would have seemed silly. The fought the expansion of gamblinf in Florida with millions of dollars in negative ad campaigns. However, now that they have clearly lost that battle, the company is considering an “aggressive” approach to gambling, and perhaps even an ESPN sports book.

Disney purchased ESPN back in 1996 when no one would have ever thought legal and regulated sports betting would have been possible. Now their CEO has admitted the company is pushing forward in the midst of American sports betting expansion. The goal is to partner with gambling operators via ESPN will bring Disney sports betting profits and a way to appeal to a younger audience.
