This Week in Gambling: Sports betting and tribal gaming trouble?

10 Jun 2021

The ink isn't even dry on the Florida sports betting and Tribal Gaming agreement with the Seminole Tribe, and already there are calls for the Federal Government to stop it. And considering that Tribal casinos are in 30 states, the outcome could affect more than just Florida. Plus, there are more Tribal Gaming interests heading to the Las Vegas Strip.

The ink isn’t even dry of the Tribal Gaming agreement with Seminole Gaming for Florida sports betting, but already there are political challenges being raised. The mayor of Miami Beach has voiced his concerns that the agreement is corrupted, and he wants the Federal Government to kill the deal.

The U.S. Department of the Interior must approve any Tribal Gaming agreement since it involves a Native American tribe. The Miami Beach mayor believes that the new sports betting compact between the Seminoles and the state has been corrupted and hijacked by politicians. The Governor of Florida responded to the mayor’s statements, calling them “...idiotic politics”, and he challenged the mayor to point out any part of the agreement that had been 'corrupted' or 'hijacked'.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas Tribal Gaming has been in the headlines lately. First, it was Mohegan Gaming that agreed to run the casino at the new Virgin Hotel located where the Hard Rock used to be. Then, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians snapped up the Palms Hotel and Casino just last month.

Now, the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota, collectively known as the Three Affiliated Tribes, have purchased a large property just off the Vegas Strip near Mandalay Bay. The group said that they may build a parking lot or a full resort casino... they haven't decided yet.
