This Week in Gambling: New York approves online sports betting

15 Apr 2021

After years of pushing, this week's gambling news finds New York mobile sports betting has been approved. Online sports bets could be live before the next Super Bowl. However, a challenge to the activity could derail everything.

The new budget for the 2022 fiscal year includes plans for New York mobile sports betting. The announcement came as the state legislature and Governor agreed on an arrangement that could allow four online sports books to be operating in the state as soon as September. The New York Lottery would issue licenses to two mobile sports betting operators, and they would subcontract licenses to a total of four operators.

The governor also promised that the state’s three tribes who are involved in gaming would be included in the New York mobile sports betting deal. The agreement also provides a way for three new land based casinos in and around New York City, the lower Hudson Valley, and perhaps Long Island by 2023. However, New York online sports betting could face a serious legal challenge from at least one Native American gaming interests.

The Oneida Indian Nation has an agreement with the state, and that 2013 agreement says that the Tribe is the “exclusive provider” of gaming in a 10-county region. However, New York mobile sports betting will be allowed across the whole state. The passage of mobile sports betting seems to require the Oneida Indian Nation to apply for a license to run mobile betting in that 10-county region included in their previous agreement.
