This Week in Gambling: Gambling news from US states

29 Apr 2021

A full week of gambling news takes us to Las Vegas first, where things are moving in the right direction for COVID-19 recovery. Also, online gambling news from New York and police raids in Arkansas.

As Las Vegas casinos move toward the state’s goal of 100% capacity limits by 1 June, the Nevada Gaming Control Board announced that they will be allowed to raise those limits to 80% beginning on 1 May.

Along with the rising capacity limits, social distancing will also be reduced to just three feet as of the first of next month. Both of these moves come as the Gaming Control Board released an emergency directive last week to let casinos follow directives of local authorities.

In addition, the Board stated each individual property could submit a waiver that would allow fewer restrictions and/or increased capacity limits, but only if they demonstrate a commitment to their obligation to vaccinate their workforce. Those waivers must be in by 27 April.

Meanwhile, New York online sports betting was finally signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Now, the real work begins. The goal is to have online and mobile sports bets fully regulated in time to let residents bet on the next Super Bowl. That means writing the rules, processing applications, and launching within nine months.

Once applications for running a web based sports book are submitted, the Gambling Commission will have 150 days to process them and select just two providers. Requests to submit applications to the state will come no later than 1 July, and those applications will go through a competitive bidding process to select the providers.
