This Week in Gambling: Florida sports betting and New York mobile betting updates
21 Oct 2021
Florida sports betting is upon us, but there is no need for celebration. The state is mired in lawsuits challenging its agreement with the Seminoles, claiming it violates federal law by authorizing sports wagering not on Tribal lands. A hearing will take place on November 5th for one of the three lawsuits facing the state on this issue. If the judge in that case were to throw the case out, some believe Florida sports betting could begin in as little as two months.
New York mobile betting is still in the works, and the State Commission did publish their “request for applications” for mobile wagering providers back in July, with plans to approve just two platforms and four operators. Now it’s a waiting game, as a spokesperson for the simply said the “review of applications continues”. So, resident wait on New York mobile sports betting and drive to New Jersey for action.
And then there is Connecticut online gambling, which made a “soft launch” on 12 October, with games available to just a few state residents. If all goes well then full Connecticut online gambling could be live as soon as 19 October.
