This Week in Gambling: Christmas online gambling and sports betting

17 Dec 2020

Our final show of 2020 wraps up the year with online gambling news involving Sheldon Adelson. There is also sports betting news involving ESPN, Caesars, and Disney. Plus, more coronavirus closures in Las Vegas and a new game review.

The state of Texas and the billionaire boss of world renowned casino operator Las Vegas Sands Corporation are believed to be investing heavily in a bid to seek reform which would see measures introduced to legalize some forms of online gambling in the state.

According to news outlets within Austin, Texas, Mr. Adelson reportedly injected approximately $4.5 million into the Republican candidates campaign. Further reports state that such a move after a proposition affecting a constitutional amendment which would permit coastal jurisdictions to premiere online gambling.

With multiple brands, including ABC and ESPN under its wing, Disney has never tried to enter into anything taboo. But with sports betting become mainstream, companies are jumping in early knowing the potential of what nationwide sports betting could do to the sports and content industry.

Disney is looking to expand its ESPN+ services after the new venture has not been as lucrative as it has hoped. They will be using the platform for more sports betting content in hopes of bringing in more viewers. Disney believes it can leverage the up and coming industry with ESPN+ to hit its 12 million subscribers goal by 2024.
