The Reel Life: When gun safety turns into irony edition

15 Aug 2013

Gun control is a testy issue these days, but if there's one thing everyone can agree on, it's that we all want to be safe.

The Reel Life values safety just as much as the next guy. But we value irony even more.

According to the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, a 73-year-old firearms instructor accidentally shot a student in the arm while teaching a gun-safety course last week. The student, Michael Piemonte, was among 29 locals taking the daylong course in order to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Piemonte, 26, said he was struck between his right elbow and armpit after the bullet ricocheted off a desk.

If Piemonte was killed, or seriously injured, this would be a sad story. But by all accounts, Piemonte is fine; he was admitted to a local hospital and released that night.

And that just makes this whole thing hilarious.

Consider the series of events:
1. A group of nearly 30 people want to own guns, presumably for their own safety.
2. They sign up for a gun-safety course, to learn how to be safe with their guns.
3. There is an instructor at the gun-safety course. Given his title and role in the class, it is implied that this person is an expert on how to be safe with guns.
4. Despite these presumptions about guns, gun safety and the responsible people who own/want to own guns, someone was shot while learning about gun safety by the guy teaching about gun safety.

The gambling equivalent of this would be if a bunch of people signed up for, say, a poker training course taught by an established pro. The students would watch the pro play, listen to the logic behind each of his moves and hope to gain some valuable skills that will make them better poker players going forward. But in the first 15 minutes of the course, the pro makes a major misstep and somehow loses his entire bankroll. Oh, and he shoots one of his students.

Actually, there might not be any good analogies for this story. It's simply too perfect.
