The Reel Life: When burgers break faces edition

22 Aug 2013

There are plenty of health risks associated with eating greasy, triple-patty hamburgers. But now we can add one more to the list.

According to The Guardian, a British woman dislocated her jaw while eating a massive burger. Nicola Peate, 25, was in such pain the next day she went to the emergency room, where medics put her jaw back into place.

"I didn't think I'd dislocated it -- you don't expect it to happen eating a burger," Peate told reporters. "But I tried to eat it with a knife and fork and couldn't. I couldn't open my mouth fully."

The burger, dubbed the "Kids in America" burger at Almost Famous in Liverpool, contained pretzels and candied bacon in addition to the three sizable patties. Here at the Reel Life, we've eaten our fair share of massive burgers, but it's safe to say none of our faces have been seriously injured in the process.

Peate has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (ELS), which means she has hyper-flexible joints that are unstable and prone to dislocation. Apparently, she has visited many hospitals over the years due to this condition. In a way, that sort of gives her a free pass from ridicule, right?

Nah. The Reel Life isn't a big fan of free passes. Even if Peate has this so-called ELS (consult your physician if you also can’t eat food like a normal person), wouldn't that at least make her more aware of the consequences of trying to wrap her tiny mouth around a burger behemoth? Shouldn't she be good at going the fork-and-knife route?

We don't feel bad for you, Peate. We will just sit here and laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Get in the fast lane Grandma, this bingo game is ready to roll!
