The Reel Life: Terms and conditions edition

11 Apr 2017

A kerfuffle has erupted in Florida over who is the rightful owner of a $100,000 jackpot payout at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood in Florida.

According to Scallyway & Vagabond, the most perfectly named publication to bring us this story, Florida gambler Jan Flato was playing the slots and asked Maria Medvedeva Navarro to push the button on the machine he was feeding, "for luck."

The luck apparently worked, because the machine hit its jackpot. Unfortunately for Flato, the person who pushes the button or lever is the one legally considered the "player," so the jackpot was Navarro's.

From there, things apparently devolved into a lot of name-calling and finger-pointing. Navarro says she was originally willing to split the jackpot—a reasonable solution that could easily have been negotiated before having two people play on one machine—but withdrew the offer in light of a bunch of nasty text messages.

While this story invites a lot of Monday-morning quarterbacking from readers about how this mess could have been avoided, what should be done next, and who owes what to whom morally, legally, it's entirely unambiguous: The jackpot is Navarro's and she can do what she likes with the money, so anyone who wants any of it is dependent upon her goodwill.

The moral of the story here, kids, is to play your own slots.

Get in the fast lane, Grandma, this bingo game is ready to roll!
