The Reel Life: Social media eggsplosion edition

22 Feb 2018

It's a little more than a month until Easter, which means only one thing for brand-conscious chocoholics: It's Cadbury Creme Egg season.

But this year's season did not kick off without a major social-media firestorm, in which an unknown social media manager threw the brand's customer base into an outraged tizzy with one poorly proofed tweet.

So what was it? Did the account tweet something racist? Did it make light of a recent or historical tragedy? Brands can't seem to stop stepping in it with those, it seems.

That's not what upset Creme Egg lovers (this time). What happened was that Twitter user Shawna Leigh asked @CadburyUK if the "creme" in "Creme Egg" was pronounced "cream," like the stuff you put in your coffee, or "crem," like how you'd say crème in French, with the accent mark on the E. (Fun fact: Microsoft Word keeps autocorrecting "creme" to "crème" as we type this. Microsoft Word is clearly programmed by philistines with terrible taste in chocolate who are ignorant of the glory of Cadbury Creme Eggs.)

Cadbury responded that it was "crem," the one that rhymes with "them." Other Twitter users were aghast, commenting things like "I feel physically sick" and "ridiculous."

Cadbury quickly dispatched its social media manager (possibly a new one) to correct the record, claiming the initial response had been a typo and that it was definitely pronounced "cream."

But the internet is not quick to forgive, and people kept sniping at the Cadbury account for giving them such a scare. Which just goes to show: Whatever their friendly quips or sick burns on social media, brands are not actually your friends. Except for @MoonPie. @MoonPie cares about you.

There's also another Creme Egg-related news story making the rounds, in which it is revealed that the Eggs are full of sugar. Which… yes? Your point?

The romantic Phantom of the Opera slot game makes its debut this week at Win A Day Casino. Based on one of the greatest love stories ever told, the new 5x4, 30-payline slot has a choice of generous bonus features and a wide betting range to appeal to all kinds of players. The casino is also adding a popular new cryptocurrency option this week: Litecoin.

Beginning Friday, all players who have made at least one deposit are eligible for a $15 freebie to try the new game.

Inspired by Andrew Lloyd Webber's spellbinding musical, the Phantom of the Opera slot game takes players on a romantic journey backstage at the Paris Opera House.

The Phantom of the Opera slot has 30 fixed paylines. Players can wager from just three cents per spin up to the max bet of 1,500 coins ($15). Three or more of the free spin scatter symbols trigger a choice of three bonus games, some awarding maximum free spins and others with fewer free spins but bigger win multipliers.

With four rather than the typical three rows on its reels, the Phantom of the Opera slot has more opportunities for winning combinations than most online slot games.
