Did you ever wonder why the Guinness Book of Records is put out by Guinness? We admit that we didn't, probably because the time when we were really obsessed with the Guinness Book of Records was also when we were too young to be particularly concerned with drinking Guinness. But we found out today, so now we're going to tell you, in case you were also too incurious to have already found out.

The story is that the guy who was Guinness' marketing director in the 1950s, Hugh Beaver, was on a hunting trip and got into an argument about what game bird was the fastest, and so he decided to write a book of all the silly statistics that people got into bar arguments about, and sell the books to bars to keep on hand before the arguments got too heated. This is the sort of thing people apparently had to do before Google, otherwise people would just argue about birds all day at the bar, we guess? The 1950s must have been a weird time.

These days, of course, if you Google "what is the fastest game bird" you get the answer via the Wikipedia article for the Guinness Book of Records, so perhaps it is still useful to have, if only to feed content into the rest of the internet. (The fastest game bird is the golden plover, by the way.)

While we found this all very interesting, we have to admit that, personally, we've never actually gotten into a bar argument about birds, or in fact about any records at all. Instead, it seems like every time we go to an Irish pub we seem to wind up in a long conversation tracing everyone's family trees back until we find some ancestor that lived in the same place as one of the other person's ancestors.

Maybe Guinness could start work on a book containing the family histories of everyone who's ever gone to a pub next. If nothing else, it'd probably be bigger and heavier than the Book of Records, and thus could still be useful for ending arguments.
