The Reel Life: Paper route edition

7 Aug 2014

There's still at least one town in the U.S. that has not transformed into the 21st century yet. And it's kind of cool.

Print newspapers are on the verge of extinction, and the old-fashioned paper route died long before it. For the ancient, still-breathing mummies who continue to subscribe to a newspaper, they often receive their daily news by some guy driving around in a car throwing the papers on the front lawn. There are no more kids riding their bikes delivering papers, because in most places in America, you'll rarely find two newspaper subscribers who live near each other.

But not in Carroll, Iowa, where there are still plenty of subscribers to The Daily Times Herald. And if you're a kid living in Carroll, you can still get a part-time gig delivering the paper on y our bicycle, just like the old days.

"Some people want it in their door, some people want it in their mailbox," said 11-year-old Jaxson Kuhlmann, who delivers 36 to 38 papers daily on his route. "There are some certain houses that you're like, 'People still live here?' You don't see them come out at all."

Eighty percent of The Daily Times Herald's papers are delivered by kids, according to NPR. They're paid 10 to 12 cents a copy.

This almost brings a tear to The Reel Life's eye. It reminds us of simpler times, when news wasn't always BREAKING and we could live without smart phones. The kids working their paper routes were our smart phones. The town hall was our Twitter. And instead of taking photographs of our food and putting them on Instagram, we just ate our food. And didn't tell anyone about it.
