The tomb, they say, is beneath the St. Nicholas church in Demre, Turkey, where he died and was buried.
You might be a little surprised to hear that this is news. We certainly were.
The reason this is news is that a tomb under the church, considered to be the tomb of St. Nicholas, was emptied and the remains within it transferred to the Italian city of Bari in the 11th century, where the bones' new home church became a pilgrimage site.
Archaeologists now believe that the bones that were moved to Italy 10 centuries ago belonged to a different monk at the church. Oops!
They believe that the body of St. Nicholas remains undisturbed in a shrine beneath the St. Nicholas church, where nobody has been able to get to it because the shrine is covered by a lovely mosaic that nobody wanted to wreck.
The archaeologists think that with modern practices, they will eventually be able to open the tomb without destroying the mosaic on top of it, and then Santa will bring the city of Demre many, many tourism dollars for Christmas.
