The Reel Life: Lottery movie ticket edition
8 Mar 2018
Now, our politics here at The Reel Life (and at Casino City more broadly) are reasonably simple: We're in favor of regulated, legalized gambling. We're definitely not in favor of blanket prohibitions, and we're not really in favor of completely unregulated gambling either, because we think customers should have some protections from and recourse against scammers. And we generally try not to bore our readers too much with our editors' political views on non-gambling-related matters, a task that has admittedly gotten a bit harder upon the election of the former Casino King of Atlantic City to the Presidency of the United States.
But… we're really not sure what to make of this proposal. It seems nice? But also, it seems like a giant giveaway to the movie industry, and should the state really be doing that? Also you're not supposed to actually talk to your family members while the movie is playing, which is why some of us actually don't go to the movies with our parents anymore, ahem.
We're admitted really curious to see more details of how this proposal might work, like who gets to decide which movies qualify and who would be eligible for the subsidy, even though it's quite unlikely the proposal will ever become reality. For one, Fields is running as a Democrat, and — the surprise election of Doug Jones notwithstanding — Alabama is a heavily Republican state, so Fields is a longshot to win. For another, Alabama politics are bananas on a level that makes New Jersey look clean — the current governor, Kay Ivey, became governor in 2017 after former Governor Robert Bentley resigned amid multiple felony accusations that seemed to be making their way toward impeachment — so even if Fields wins, who knows what sort of interesting shenanigans could crop up to derail things?
