The Reel Life: Geography pop quiz edition

13 Sep 2016

A real estate blog has compiled a list of the most amusing town names in each state in the United States.

There's a great deal of variety in how U.S. towns have historically been named. Some town names are approximations of Native American place-names in the area; some towns are named after other towns where the settlers came from—sometimes with a "New" appended to it, sometimes not. Others are named after people or industries or natural formations. And some have got to have some sort of wacky story behind them, but we're a little afraid to ask what it is, like in Troublesome, Colorado.

Some of the names highlighted in the list seem obvious to their particular states, such as Volcano, Hawaii, and Jackpot, Nevada. Others, we have questions about—namely Chicken, Alaska, and Chicken Bristle, Illinois. (Specifically, we have the question "What's with all the chickens?")

Massachusetts appears to be celebrating its dour Puritan heritage with a town named Satan's Kingdom; meanwhile, just a few miles south, Rhode Island can't come up with anything funnier than Woonsocket—which is, admittedly, fun to say—probably because Rhode Island's too small to have more than about three towns in it anyway.

Oh, and is it just us, or is Normal, Illinois, definitely hiding something?

Anyway, we're off to play some online slots. We'll let you come up with your own jokes about Weiner, Arkansas; Manley Hot Springs, Alaska; Climax, Michigan; and Intercourse, Pennsylvania.

Get in the fast lane, Grandma, this bingo game is ready to roll!

Springbok's casino manager had a very personal rhino experience earlier this year.

"There is a special Rhino that we often post about on Facebook," said Springbok manager, Daniel Van Wyk. "Our players love him. His name is Osita and he lives in a wildlife reserve near Cape Town. I had a chance to visit him on a recent vacation. It was a humbling experience. What a magnificent animal!"

Osita is a resident of ARC (Aquila Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Conservation Centre), a sanctuary for animals that can never be released into the wild again and a temporary home for those who need attention before being released into the wild. There are lots of photos of Osita on the Centre's Facebook page where there is also information on the group's wildlife rescue and rehabilitation projects.

Initiated by WWF-South Africa in 2010, World Rhino Day celebrates all five species of rhino: Black, White, Greater One-Horned, Sumatran and Javan rhinos. World Rhino Day has grown to become a global phenomenon, uniting NGOs, zoos, cause-related organizations, businesses, and concerned individuals around the world. World Rhino Day highlights efforts to debunk myths and diminish the demand for rhino horn.

SpringBok Casino, where customer service is offered in both English and Afrikaans, has hundreds of online slots and table games from Realtime Gaming (RTG), all played in Rands. In the newest game, Panda Magic, scatters trigger up to 30 free spins where all payouts are doubled. Like all of its most popular games, Panda Magic is available in Springbok's mobile casino for smartphones and tablets.
