Last week, Nigel No-Mates, the sole living gannet inhabitant of Mana Island off the coast of New Zealand, died. He is survived by his longtime girlfriend, a concrete decoy of a gannet, and a colony of about 80 other concrete decoys.

Scientists had put the decoys out in a visible spot on Mana Island back in 2013, in the hopes of attracting actual birds to the island to start a colony. But Nigel was the only pioneer brave enough to leave his home and strike out for a new life on Mana Island, surrounded by cold and silent strangers.

Very recently, three other birds have landed on the island, so possibly they'll start up a real population one of these days. But by the time they arrived, Nigel had apparently become too set in his ways to befriend these new, noisy, moving gannets. "There goes the neighborhood," he probably thought. "Kids these days make such a ruckus."

This isn't the first time that scientists have tried to lure birds to new settlements by trying to make it look like birds were already there. In Maine, a team of scientists has been reintroducing puffins to the islands in the Gulf of Maine for years. Because puffins are very social, the scientists had to provide decoys in this case too. Because scientists are underfunded, the decoys only had one leg; and then, because puffins are apparently a bunch of socially conformist middle schoolers, the real puffins would also stand on one leg in order to fit in with the crowd when they were hanging out with the fake puffins. Somebody needs to do something about the new puffins' self-esteem.
