The Reel Life: $20 million shopping spree edition

16 Feb 2012

The Reel Life has gone on a few slot sprees in our day. But we've never been on a shopping spree, and certainly not one that cost $20 million.

According to the New York Post, a man from New York had to be hospitalized after he suffered a manic breakdown and purchased $20 million worth of products at the New York International Gift Fair. That event is considered "the premier gift and decorative accessories market in the United States." Ed Bazinet, the major spender, is considered one of New York's richest men. Reports say he made a $100 million fortune from selling miniature ceramic houses and his apartment alone is worth $28 million. So if any man could afford to spend $20 million at a craft fair, it's him.

However, Bazinet also suffers from bi-polar disorder, and he had an episode during his five-day spending spree.

"He’d just say, 'Give me 1,000 of this and 1,000 of that!'" designer Nima Oberoi told the Post. "He wasn’t looking at prices, and he was giving insane unit numbers. He didn’t ask questions about the products."

At one booth, Bazinet ordered $1.6 million of soap, sachets and clothes hanger covers.

He has now been hospitalized, and reports say that most, if not all, of Bazinet's orders have been canceled.

The Reel Life hopes this is a lesson for both multi-millionaires and vendors who cater to multi-millionaires. If someone orders $1.6 million of soap, sachets and clothes hanger covers, dial 911 immediately.
