Take a Chance and Play Blackjack

21 Sep 2023

By Royal Flushes
CINDY: We had a very interesting trip to Atlantic City recently.

ABBY: We stayed at our favorite Atlantic City casino and we had some great talks with other players.

CINDY: Many slot players actually want to give table games a try but some things stop them. Things that shouldn’t stop them.

ABBY: We were talking in a slot aisle about one of the columns we were going to write and this woman came over. She actually was a fan of this web site and had read our articles. That made us feel great.

CINDY: Great! Writers want to be read.

ABBY: She explained that she was “worried” about trying her hand at blackjack. She liked the idea that the game is a close contest between player and casino but she was afraid that other players would get “on” her for being slow or making mistakes in her strategy decisions. These fears have stopped her from playing the game.

CINDY: I explained that blackjack was a really fun game and that the decisions you make on how to play your hands against the dealer’s up card were the overall key over time on how you would do. She shouldn’t shy away from playing.

ABBY: She wanted to know what she should do if the other players or the dealers get on her for being slow. Or not knowing what to do with any given hand. We both explained that she should read a book or two concerning the game and to make sure she used basic strategy when she played. We recommended Frank Scoblete’s excellent book “Beat Blackjack Now.”

CINDY: She could make a copy of the basic strategy or even buy one from a casino stationary store. Even if there are little difference in strategies from one type of game to another, usually based on the number of decks or the rules of play, these aren’t that big a deal.

ABBY: Basic strategy is the computer-derived play of every player hand against the dealer’s up card.

CINDY: We did warn her against falling for some of the blackjack “experts” who give wrong basic strategies based on their flawed logic and misunderstanding of the game. These “experts” can really hurt the player’s overall results.

ABBY: We gave her some names of crummy blackjack “experts” and warned her that some players, a very, very small percentage also think of themselves as experts and will give advice at the table. You can ignore these people. We sometimes might say to one “it is my money and I will play as I please.”

CINDY: Ignore the table experts. Just play the proper basic strategy and you will be okay.

ABBY: We then warned her against playing certain systems, like the Martingale, where you double your previous bet if you lost it. That’s a very bad system. Keep your betting where you can handle the double-downs and the splits without worrying about losing them. Do not parley your bets either. Don’t give the casinos more money to use their edge against.

CINDY: Just as with slots, give yourself a certain amount of money to play with and if things don’t seem to be going your way, take a break. It doesn’t show weakness in taking a break to recover yourself and get your head straight.

ABBY: With about a one-half percent edge, blackjack is a good game to play.

CINDY: We did say to play at a full or almost full table so you don’t play too many hands. That’s just you betting more money into the casino edge.

ABBY: She seemed happy to talk with us and we encouraged her to go slowly and play without fear. She said she would give it a try.

CINDY: We also had another conversation with another slot player and we’ll tackle that one in the next issue.
