State Shuts Down Internet Gaming Site

8 Aug 2005

HARTFORD, Connecticut -- A month after shutting down a Web promotion by Foxwoods Resort Casino, the state has ordered a halt to an Internet gambling site run by Penn National Gaming Inc.

The Division of Special Revenue blocked Connecticut patrons from parimutuel waging on eBet USA. Last month, the agency told Foxwoods to stop a promotion on the Web that regulators believed was a type of Internet gambling.

The Connecticut Lottery was also blocked from introducing a computer-based gambling game two years ago.

"In Connecticut you cannot use the Internet for online gambling. Period. Telephone gambling is OK," said Paul Young, executive director of the Special Revenue Division.
