Spanish gaming regulator imposes several fines

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Spanish gambling regulator, the General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling, has levied fines totaling €77 million against 14 online gambling operators for operating without the necessary licenses.

The penalties imposed by the DGOJ range from €5 million to €10 million, with the majority of the operators facing fines at the lower end of this spectrum. One operator, however, received the maximum fine due to what the DGOJ classified as “more severe violations.” This action reflects the regulator’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal gambling activities and ensure compliance within the industry.

A spokesperson for the DGOJ stated that these fines are part of a broader strategy to protect the integrity of Spain’s legal gambling market. The regulator has made it clear that it will take stringent measures against companies that jeopardize consumer safety or operate outside the legal framework.

Earlier this year, the DGOJ organized an anti-money laundering summit aimed at addressing the risks associated with unlicensed gambling. This summit highlighted concerns such as identity theft, terrorist financing, and fraud, which are often linked to illegal gambling operations.

Despite the crackdown on unlicensed operators, the Spanish online gambling market is experiencing continued growth. Projections for 2025 indicate that gross gaming revenue (GGR) could reach a record €1.45 billion. While licensed operators stand to benefit from this upward trend, the DGOJ has issued warnings regarding the increasing threat posed by illegal platforms to market integrity and consumer safety.
