TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- As reported by the Miami Herald: "Florida schools stand to lose millions of dollars in funding because slot machines in Broward County aren't bringing in as much money as the state expected.

"New economic forecasts show legislators will have to fill a $45 million deficit because gamblers are spending far less than anticipated on thousands of slots now in use at three parimutuels: Gulfstream Park, Mardi Gras Racetrack and Gaming Center, and Isle Casino and Racing at Pompano Park. A fourth parimutuel, Dania Jai Alai, has yet to put slot machines in.

"Machines that were forecast to take in $212 a day each are instead projected to take in substantially less, with economists projecting, for example, that slot machines at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach would each take in nearly $85 a day.

"Normally, legislators could fill the gap with other state money, but that's not a sure bet this time.

"...When Florida lawmakers passed a $71 billion budget earlier this year, they counted on spending nearly $1.6 billion on education from a combination of ticket sales from the Florida Lottery and money the state gets from taxes on slot machines.

"The money was set aside for a variety of programs in public schools, universities and community colleges..."
