SkyCity Accused of Muscling Into Rival

NEW ZEALAND – As reported by the New Zealand Herald: "A mysterious game of boardroom musical chairs at Christchurch Casino became more intriguing yesterday with an allegation from its chairman that gambling heavyweight SkyCity was trying to `muscle its way' into the business.

"Christchurch Casino's long-serving managing director, Arthur Pitcher, was stood down from the board last Friday in a move chairman Barry Thomas said was intended `to put him in a neutral position because of shareholder issues'.

"…Thomas said he was `aware of rumours and substantial sources' claiming London-based casino operator Aspinall, which owns 30.7 per cent of the Christchurch Casino, was in discussions to sell its stake to SkyCity.

"…SkyCity owns the country's largest casino, Auckland, and is the majority joint-venture partner in SkyCity Hamilton and SkyCity Queenstown…"
