Sherlock Holmes is an audiophile's dream

19 Jun 2008

From the theme music in Rocky and Jaws to the haunting scores for Alfred Hitchcock movies, music has been a critical component to the success of movies for decades. Music has also been important in television – with excellent theme songs and sound effects setting the stage and taking audiences in and out of scenes – and video games – where sound either created amazing levels of authenticity or transported you into complete different worlds. But until Rushmore Casino's Sherlock Holmes slots game, no casino game designer had ever created a game where the music alone made it worth playing.

Jaunty classical music – the type you would hear if you excitedly searching for clues in a TV show or movie -- can be heard in the background as you play the 5-reel, 25-line game. The music (which is very good) gradually builds to a crescendo as the reels are stopped, and fades back quickly when play resumes. And the either oboe or bassoon that's played for a winning line is brilliant. Another nice touch is Holmes occasionally exclaiming "Well done Watson" after some winning hands.

An illustration of Sherlock Holmes serves as the scatter symbol, and three of those trigger the free game feature. But once again, it's the sound and the music that distinguish both the scatter symbol and the bonus round.

Each time the scatter symbol lands, you hear Holmes exclaim "Ah-ha!" When two symbols hit, a subtle – but impressive – drum roll begins in anticipation of a possible third scatter symbol, which would trigger the bonus round. Three scatter symbols bring five free spins, four symbols bring 10 free spins and five symbols bring 15 free spins.

The bonus round begins with a nice "Elementary my dear Watson" sound effect, and the music quickly switches from upbeat and jaunty to calm and soothing. Each scatter symbol in the bonus round automatically earns you more free spins. Prizes are tripled during the bonus round. And the bonus can be re-triggered.

So the next time you're in the mood to hit the slots, go ahead and crank up the speakers and play Rushmore Casino's Sherlock Holmes. From the music to the game itself, you'll be thoroughly entertained.
