Senecas Scoff at Oklahoma Tribal Casino Talks

23 Jun 2004

ALBANY, New York – As reported by the Buffalo News: "With the state working on a deal with an Oklahoma tribe for a scaled-down casino in downtown Rochester, a Seneca Nation leader said Monday the tribe is not worried about new gambling competition because the federal government will never approve the deal for the out-of-state tribe.

"The Pataki administration has been negotiating an agreement with the Seneca- Cayuga tribe of Oklahoma to resolve a land claim over 64,000 acres in the Finger Lakes area. The agreement would permit the tribe to open casinos in Rochester and Cayuga Lake.

"'They don't have a land base here. They're not entitled to any privileges in New York State,' said Barry Snyder, chairman of the Seneca Nation's tribal council.

"…Asked what he thought about the Pataki administration's negotiating casino rights for an area where the Senecas believe they have exclusive rights, Snyder said, 'Whatever - the Patakis are wackos, anyway.'…"
