Seneca Nation Reconsiders Casino Site

NEW YORK – As reported by the Buffalo News: "The Seneca Nation of Indians is taking a fresh look at Buffalo as the location for its third gaming facility.

"Time is starting to be a factor, as the tribe's casino compact with the State of New York expires Aug. 31.

"…Last June, a State Supreme Court justice blocked the Senecas from building a casino on a 57-acre Cheektowaga site adjacent to Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Although nearly nine months have passed since the ruling, the Town of Cheektowaga has yet to file an appeal.

"…The Seneca leader said the nation is re-examining its options in 'the entire City of Buffalo.'

"…Mayor Anthony M. Masiello, an ardent supporter of a city casino, said he's thrilled the Senecas are refocusing on Buffalo.

"…Masiello said he prefers a downtown location where a casino would tap into an established hospitality/entertainment industry. But he said that will not be a hurdle to any discussions.

"…Under the terms of the state gaming compact, the Senecas have until Aug. 31 to have an Erie County casino 'under construction,' or they will lose the right to develop a third gaming operation. The Senecas could beat the deadline by opening a temporary gaming site, or possibly filing physical plans for a permanent site…"
