Seneca Nation Elects New President

IRVING, New York – As reported by the Associated Press: "Barry Snyder was elected president of the Seneca Indian Nation Tuesday, beating two other candidates in a race that focused largely on the future of the nation's casinos.

"Snyder defeated Cyrus Schindler and Robert Jones with 52 percent of the vote.

"Snyder had said the annuity elderly Seneca members receive from casino profits has been too low and said he favored replacing the non-Senecas currently running the casinos with Seneca members.

"…Snyder won against Schindler in a Seneca Party primary by a vote of 549 to 487.

"Jones joined the race as a third-party candidate on an antigambling platform. Jones said if elected he would hold a referendum to allow Seneca members to decide what to do with its casinos in Niagara Falls and Salamanca…"
