Seneca Hedges Bet
NEW YORK – As reported by the Buffalo News: "The Seneca Nation of Indians confirmed Tuesday it wants to develop a Buffalo casino in the former DL&W Terminal at the foot of Main Street - but it is hedging its bet by acquiring a nearby site in the city's Cobblestone neighborhood.
"'This is an historical announcement for the Seneca Nation, and the people of Buffalo and Erie County,' Seneca President Barry E. Snyder Sr. told a crowd assembled in Niagara Square. 'This is an all-important first step.'
"Snyder, who purposely avoided mentioning the former terminal of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western rail terminal or any specific properties in his formal remarks, later confirmed the Senecas have signed a purchase agreement for a group of properties totaling nine acres.
"…While the land along Michigan Avenue, two blocks east of HSBC Arena, is large enough to accommodate a casino, the former terminal remains the Senecas' prime target, said Rajat Shah, a Seneca Gaming Corp. executive.
"…Shah and Snyder said the Senecas plan to acquire needed properties through purchases and not eminent domain…"
