Scientific Games Awarded Patent for Prize Multiplier
NEW YORK – (Press Release) -- Scientific Games Corporation (Nasdaq: SGMS) today announced that it has been awarded U.S. Patent No. 6,692,354 for its innovative "Method Of Playing A Group Participation Game." The patent was issued on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, bringing to three the number of patents issued to Scientific Games for this unique game family.
The patented game methods and systems feature the play of an individual participation wagering game in association with a second group wagering game. Winners of the first game who also elected to play in the second, or group game, win or lose together as a group the chance to have their initial individual prizes multiplied based on the outcome of the second game.
The patents apply to games that have an optional bonus wager as a feature of the game. In the event that a player wins a prize in the game and has opted to make the bonus wager, the player's prize in the game may be multiplied by a pre-determined amount. Games developed for U.S. lotteries, casinos, horse and dog racing, as well as jai alai are covered by the patents. Scientific Games has granted International Game Technology (NYSE: IGT) the exclusive rights to use this patent for casino games.
"We welcome the news about this patent," said Scientific Games Chairman and CEO Lorne Weil. "Scientific Games' philosophy of continuous creativity and inventiveness enables us to provide high quality entertainment content to our customers. The product possibilities from this family of intellectual property are wide-reaching in the gaming industry."
Earlier related patents include U.S. Patent No. 6,416,408 issued July 9, 2002, and U.S. Patent No. 6,648,753 issued November 18, 2003. The company has several additional U.S. and international patents pending that relate to this game method and system. This intellectual property was obtained by Scientific Games from International Game Technology as a part of Scientific Games' purchase of IGT OnLine Entertainment Systems in November 2003.
