Rugby League, Betfair to Discuss Future Projects
AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: "NRL boss David Gallop will meet representatives of Betfair next week in an effort to explore a possible new revenue stream for the NRL.
"Betfair is the world's biggest betting exchange and turns over £50 million (US$60.7 million) a week in Britain, where individual punters with opposing views on an event are able to make fixed-price bets.
"PBL executive chairman James Packer has formed a joint venture with Betfair in Australia and New Zealand, and now the NRL and other sports, frustrated with the small amount of money the TAB puts back, are keen to know what it can offer.
"…'They [Betfair] approached us and we have been talking to other sports about their position on it and gambling in general, and in particular their position regarding online betting,' Gallop said.
"…'Our first concern is protecting the integrity of the sport. The fact is, though, our game doesn't benefit in any real financial way from gambling at present and we have to decide whether we should or not.'…"
