Roulette Becomes William Hill Favourite
UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the UK Guardian: "William Hill, the bookmaker that recently joined the FTSE 100 index, yesterday said its 3,500 touch-screen roulette terminals were generating an average weekly profit of £400 (US$706.69) each.
"Chief executive David Harding said earlier this year that the amount bet at the group's 1,600 outlets had almost doubled due to the popularity of the machines.
"The group plans to install a further 500 terminals by the end of next month. Analysts expect more than 40% of the amount wagered at William Hill shops in 2004 will be through the roulette machines.
"This would make roulette a more popular gamble than any other betting shop offering - including horse racing. Analysts estimate the machines will generate £2.1bn (US$3.71 billion) in turnover at William Hill this year, while traditional over-the-counter bets will amount to about £3bn (US$3.58 billion).
"…The company said its roulette terminal installation programme would stop this year at 4,000…"
