Rank prepares for smoking ban
UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Yorkshire Post Today: "Bingo and smoking used to go together like bread and cheese.
"Not any more in Scotland. And not for much longer in England and Wales, where smoking bans are soon to be introduced.
"The leisure company Rank saw taxable profits from ongoing businesses fall 12 per cent in 2006 after disposals and the Scotland smoking ban, which hit revenues north of the Border by 15 per cent.
"…Rank chief Ian Burke said he expected the smoking ban in England and Wales to have a similar effect to that in Scotland.
"…The company's underlying profit before tax fell to £44.4m from £50.5m, even though revenue from ongoing operations rose 3.5 per cent to £549.6m.
"Rank runs Mecca bingo clubs and Grosvenor casinos…"
