Racing UK adds Hong Kong racing to schedule

6 Dec 2016

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Racecourse Media Group is delighted to announce the addition of Hong Kong horse racing to Racing U.K.'s (Sky 432/Virgin 536 and 411/Freeview 231) coverage.

In an exciting new partnership with the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), Racing U.K. will show the world-famous action from the stunning backdrops of Sha Tin and Happy Valley, starting with Longines Hong Kong International Races week, which gets underway with the International Jockeys' Challenge tomorrow (7 December).

In all, Racing U.K., the only place to see the coverage in HD, will show 63 fixtures on its broadcast and digital platforms this season, the timings of which complement the domestic action from the core offering of the 34 U.K. tracks.

Nick Mills, Commercial Director of Racecourse Media Group, parent company of Racing U.K., said, "This is a wonderful opportunity for British viewers to experience the high-octane racing from Hong Kong, which will include many familiar horses and jockeys.

"Both jurisdictions are always looking to explore opportunities together and this year a record five meetings from RMG courses were shown in Hong Kong. That not only offers British racing a wonderful shop window, but also generates significant revenues to racecourses through wagering on those races in Hong Kong."

George Irvine, Commingling Development Director for the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said, "I'm really pleased that Racing U.K. has decided to add Hong Kong racing to their impressive racing portfolio, especially in time for their subscribers to enjoy the World Championship of International Racing at the Longines Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin on 11 December."

The Jockeys' Challenge event at Happy Valley is part of the lead-up to Hong Kong's showcase meeting, the Longines Hong Kong International Races, four days later at Sha Tin.

Three-time British champion Ryan Moore and nine-time champion in Ireland, Pat Smullen, will be among the line-up as will Mickael Barzalona (France), Mirco Demuro (Italy), Florent Geroux (U.S.), Keita Tosaki (Japan), Hugh Bowman (Aus) last year's winner Gavin Lerena (South Africa), and Joao Moreira, Zac Purton, Douglas Whyte and Derek Leung, who will all represent Hong Kong.

And then on Sunday, 11 December, the racing world's eyes will be on the glittering Longines Hong Kong International Races, featuring four Group One events.

Highland Reel will bid to become the third dual winner of the Hong Kong Vase when he spearheads a strong European challenge at the International meeting. He was one of 23 Group One winners among the 54 horses announced for the $HK83 million (£8.6 million) event, which comprises the Vase, the Sprint, the Mile and the Cup itself.

Oli Bell and Mark Milligan will be in the studio to guide viewers through the action on Wednesday, with Bell joined by former HKJC commentator Richard Hoiles on Sunday.
