Punter Wins Over £1 Million
12 Nov 2004
UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the UK Guardian: "You can keep the razzle dazzle of your super-casinos, internet betting exchanges and the national lottery: there is no substitute for heading down the bookies, putting a monkey on the gee-gees and picking a winner.
"And so it was that a lucky punter known only as Ken popped into his local Betfred in Salford, Greater Manchester, last Saturday for an old-fashioned flutter and became the first person to win more than a million in a bookmaker's.
"Despite scooping £1,132,657 after gambling £480 on the Tote Scoop 6, where punters must pick six winners in six horse races selected by the Tote, Ken seemed oblivious to his big win.
"…Now Ken, who asked to remain anonymous after being told of his triumph, could pocket a further £754,452 in the bonus race selected by the Tote this weekend…"
