Poker Player Tweets of the Week: Basketball is back

1 Nov 2013

By Dan Podheiser
On Monday night, all eyes will be on the World Series of Poker Main Event final table, as nine talented players battle for the WSOP championship bracelet and an $8.36 million top prize. The November Nine is the premier event on the poker calendar, and the Penn and Teller Theater at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino will be buzzing next week. Players' friends and family fly in from all over the world to cheer, make side bets and indulge in the inevitable after-parties. But until that point, they have some time to kill. And is there a better way to kill time than by watching NBA basketball? That's right, a new season is upon us and the league is ripe with storylines to keep fans -- and bettors like me -- at the edge of their seats. The NBA is one of the best sports to bet on, making it one of the most popular (behind the NFL and maybe college football) in the poker-playing and degenerate community. Naturally, poker players took to Twitter this week to share some thoughts on the Association. Sunday, Oct. 27: Haralabos "@haralabob" Voulgaris In addition being a high-stakes poker player, Haralabos Voulgaris is one of the most prolific (and probably most famous) NBA handicappers in the world. He watches almost every single game, studies film and has created algorithms to beat spreads and consistently earn cash every year. But apparently, the NBA is "unbettable" now. Voulgaris claims that the rapid increase in the use of the three-point shot -- the most high-variance play in the game -- makes beating the bookmakers much more difficult. Still, it's hard to imagine calling $3 million not worth working for. Then again, it's all relative. Voulgaris spends countless hours researching the game and a lot of money on overhead for his betting system, and already has a pretty hefty bankroll. So $3 million indeed might not be worth his time. Sick life. Every Single Day: Phil "@phil_hellmuth" Hellmuth Big surprise: Phil Hellmuth is name-dropping on Twitter. He must have a lot of famous friends and is really important and cool. Hellmuth is supposedly a really great guy despite his "Poker Brat" persona on TV, and I don't doubt that. But dude, cool it with this stuff. We already know you were starved for attention as a child, you don't have to make it that much more obvious. I'm just kidding around. Keep winning bracelets, Phil. Thursday, Oct. 31: Christian "@realcharder30" Harder Stephen Curry is phenomenal, which is why I picked him at 14-to-1 to win the scoring title. As Harder points out, Curry is a better bet taking an off-balance three in traffic than anyone else with a layup. Curry had just 10 points in the season opener, but followed up with 38 against the Clippers on Thursday night. While 24 points a game probably won't win him the title, the 38-point outburst is pretty encouraging, especially when you're getting 14-1 odds. Thursday, Oct. 31: Tripp "@tkirk12" Kirk Oh, you mean like this? Wednesday, Oct. 30: Joshua "@golferjosh" Arieh How dare you, Josh Arieh? Allen Iverson is one of the most influential athletes of the last 50 years, and No. 2 in the NBA a spot behind Michael Jordan. (Editor's note: Apparently, Dan is going to make defending claims made in this column a regular feature on the Casino City Gang podcast.) "AI" transcended the game both on the court and off. His 26.7 points per game are sixth all time. His jersey was the top seller every year for close to a decade. His corn rows inspired maybe the worst fashion movement of the 21st century. The guy was a God, even if you didn't like his personality or supposed lack of work ethic. And as a Philly fan, I can safely say that there was no athlete more fun to watch than Iverson. I miss those days, even if we never really won anything.
