PinnacleSports.com Releases Heisman Odds

24 Aug 2005

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao – (PRESS RELEASE) -- With the start of the 2005 college football season less than two weeks away, the Heisman hype has already begun as a number of talented athletes vie for the sport's most prestigious award. Although a single game is yet to be played, leading Internet sportsbook PinnacleSports.com today entered the Heisman debate by announcing its pre-season odds on who will capture college football's most celebrated award this season.

Although there is an abundance of worthy candidates that deserve consideration for the award, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner appears to have the inside edge to become the only second two-time winner in NCAA history. PinnacleSports.com lists Matt Leinart, last year's winner and quarterback for the two-time defending national champion USC Trojans, as an overwhelming 13/10 favorite to join Archie Griffith as a repeat Heisman winner. Leinart's teammate and fifth place finisher in last year's Heisman voting, running back Reggie Bush has the second-best odds to run away with the Heisman at 9/2 odds. PinnacleSports.com believes last year's runner-up Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson, also has a legitimate chance to supplant Leinart as college football's best player, listing the sophomore running back at 13/2 to win the prestigious honor. The ability to lead his offense by using both his arm and legs not only makes Texas quarterback Vince Young one of the most dangerous offensive players in the NCAA, but also a solid Heisman candidate at 7/1 odds.

"The fact that the Heisman Trophy has been awarded to a quarterback in each of the past five seasons indicates that the voters have a penchant for signal callers above all other positions," said Simon Noble of PinnacleSports.com. "Although there's only been one two-time winner in the award's illustrious history, Leinart was an easy choice to make the Heisman favorite as he again leads the dynamic offense of the top-ranked Trojans, who are also favorites to win a third consecutive National Title. While Leinart reaps most of the accolades, Reggie Bush is viewed by many as the most explosive player in the nation and could surpass his teammate in the voters' minds if Leinart falters or suffers an injury."

PinnacleSports.com has created individual odds for several other players that could easily be named the top college football player in 2005. These include: Ohio State's Tedd Ginn Jr. (11/1); Florida's Chris Leak (11/1); Michigan's Chad Henne (18/1); Iowa's Drew Tate (18/1); Texas A&M's Reggie McNeal (22/1); California's Marshawn Lynch (32/1); Virginia Tech's Marcus Vick (38/1); and Minnesota's Laurence Maroney (38/1).

With two USC players considered the top Heisman candidates, PinnacleSports.com has also created a betting option on whether a Trojan player will win the award this season. The odds that a player from USC takes college football's top individual honor currently stand at 5/4 odds, while the chances that the Heisman winner isn't a Trojan stand at 5/7.
